John F. Kennedy once noted that, "when written in Chinese, the word 'crisis' is composed of two characters. One represents danger and the other represents opportunity."
My name is Raman Madan and I’ve worked in the field of crisis and disaster management since 2001 on a local, national and international level, mostly within the government. This gave me the opportunity to gain vast experience on a wide scope of topics, i.e. mass casualties, victim tracking, large scale events, terrorism, outbreak management, information management and training, whether in preparedness, planning, response or project management.
In 2017 I decided to spread my wings and joined the European consortium of 8 countries aimed to investigate the possibility of creating, running and maintaining a level 3 field hospital (EMT 3 – WHO) within Europe. The project ran for two years with funding, support and guidance of the European Commission (DG ECHO). My role as the project manager of the European Modular Field Hospital (#EUMFH) project ended in January 2019.
Whether the EUMFH becomes a reality depends on the Member States and Participating States of the EU, who will have to decide if they consider it necessary and worth having a resource as this in our region, in case of a disaster.
For your info, there are presently only two EMT3s in the World: in Israel and China.
The idea to develop software came to me after I had finished my tenure of 4 yrs with the ministry of Security & Justice and returned to my previous employer, the Safety Region of Rotterdam-Rijnmond. The step to the Safety Region offered me a great new portfolio and a new opportunity to reflect on what I had seen, learnt and accomplished. It was then I realised, I could make a difference.
My lightbulb moment: the Emergency Management App (EMApp).
So alongside the EUMFH project, I also embarked on the other adventure: to make EMApp a reality.
Two years later, after many bumps, research and trials, the first version is ready.
And version 2 and 3 are already scripted!
